Manchester City’s Rodri suffered a major setback and must now look forward, optimising each step of his recovery.
The Spain international midfielder and recent Ballon D’Or winner is widely regarded as one of the best footballers in the world. He suffered ligament damage in his right knee during a Premier League match against Arsenal. He underwent ACL surgery and meniscus repair, and will miss the rest of the season.
Rodri would have experienced world class care. Preparation for surgery to recover from the acute effects of trauma. Optimising the timing for surgery. The post-operative recovery will now include all of the elements that I discuss in my recent talk on Successful Return to Sport after Knee Surgery
This type of world class care is not limited to elite sports – it can be experienced by all, with critical elements to consider:
- Early intervention to recover from acute trauma
- Timing of surgery
- Surgical techniques to minimise inflammation
- Early reduction in post-operative swelling
- Early function of muscle strength and condition. There is now evidence that open-chain quads should be started as soon as possible after control is regained
- Return-to-Sport safely: minimising the risk of further injury
- Physical, team social and psychological readiness
