TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY

When the knee has global damage either from the progressive wear of osteoarthritis or the damage from inflammation, then replacing the whole joint is an excellent solution. It is first important to determine that the pain and dysfunction is bad enough and all potential non-operative measures have been explored.

Total knee replacements create an entirely new joint. There is a single metal femoral component that articulates with hardened plastic as the new weight-bearing surface. It is incredibly hard wearing.

In recent years there have been advances in our understanding of how the knee works and how we can best recreate normal anatomy. With pre-operative imaging and examination, I can predict your normal pre-arthritis alignment and the 3D orientation of your knee joint. During the procedure each bone cut is measured and matched to the implant dimensions. This allows your total knee replacement to recreate your knee with an individualised approach to your unique anatomy.

Intra-operative guidance can either be manual or assisted by a robot-arm which is paired with a pre-operative CT scan.
